Top Breastfeeding Essentials for Expectant Moms
From St. Louis Maternity & Newborn Photographer Amber Sargent
Hello, St. Louis moms-to-be! Congratulations on your pregnancy! As your caring local maternity and newborn photographer, I’ve met many new moms and know how important it is to be prepared for your breastfeeding journey. I am always seeing social media posts from moms, and having my client moms asking me about breastfeeding. Many new moms feel worry about breastfeeding, but really want to try, and want to feel prepared for it. I myself was fortunately able to breastfeed my 3 children, and would love to share this list of top breastfeeding items I believe you’ll need or want, complete with Amazon links for easy shopping.
1. Nursing Pillow
Boppy Original Nursing Pillow and Positioner
A good nursing pillow can make breastfeeding more comfortable for both you and your baby by providing the right support. I personally used a Boppy with my kids.
2. Breast Pump
Spectra Baby USA S1 Plus Electric Breast Pump
Whether you plan to exclusively breastfeed or pump occasionally, a reliable breast pump is essential. The Spectra S1 is highly recommended for its efficiency and ease of use. It has a rechargeable battery so you can take it on the go! I used this with my last two babies and it was perfect!
Elvie Stride
For handsfree portability, I personally recommend the Elvie stride. I found it easy to use, clean, and pump on the go, or even just at home, but handsfree. I used this as my primary pump with my last baby!
3. Nursing Bras
Kindred Bravely Nursing Bras
Comfortable and convenient, these bras make breastfeeding and pumping easier, especially during those early months. I have used the sublime nursing bra and the wireless sleep bra- they are great quality and so comfy!
4. Nursing Pads
Lansinoh Stay Dry Nursing Pads
Leakage can be a common issue for breastfeeding moms. These nursing pads are absorbent and discreet, keeping you dry and comfortable.
Reusable Nursing Pads
Bamboobies reusable washable nursing pads are also amazing and environmentally friendly option! I found them to be more comfortable than the disposable ones.
5. Nipple Cream
Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream
To prevent and soothe sore nipples, this lanolin cream is a lifesaver. It’s safe for both mom and baby.
6. Breast Milk Storage Bags
For moms who pump, these storage bags are perfect for storing and freezing breast milk. I have mostly used the Lansinoh brand over the years.
7. Nursing Cover
If you prefer privacy while breastfeeding in public, a nursing cover can be very useful. They come in cute patterns and can double as a car seat cover too!
8. Breastfeeding-Friendly Clothing
Comfortable, accessible clothing makes breastfeeding easier. Get yourself some cozy nursing nightgowns, pajamas, and tank tops. You will LIVE in these clothes postpartum (and end of pregnancy too!)

Body Armour Drinks
These drinks are known in the breastfeeding world for helping to increase your supply! In general, with breastfeeding, be sure to drink PLENTY of water, consume enough calories, and try to eat as nutritiously as your can. Making milk is hard work on your body!
10. Nursing Chair
A comfortable chair is a must for those long nursing sessions. Make sure you get yourself a comfortable glider or recliner to rest your body in while you nurse and cuddle your new baby. These are some of the very best moments that just don’t last long enough.
***BONUS***
Wet/dry bags
Wet/dry bags are essential for storing pump parts when and if you go back to work! These ones I found are particularly pretty, but I had some amazon basic ones that worked great too!
Haaka Milk Collector
I can’t even believe I almost forgot my most favorite breastfeeding item: the haaka. This little sucker (literally) helps you build your precious “freezer stash”, which is great to have when others want to feed your baby or you return to work. Most definitely, get a haaka if you plan to breastfeed!
That should get you started!
Preparing for breastfeeding is all about having the right tools and creating a nurturing environment for you and your baby. I hope these essentials will help make your breastfeeding journey smoother and more comfortable. If you struggle in the beginning, know that it’s normal, and don’t give up unless you truly want to stop. FED is best! If you want to continue, but are struggling, seek help and advise from a local lactation consultant.
As you get ready to welcome your little one, don't forget to capture these precious moments. If you're looking for a maternity or newborn photography session, I would love to help create beautiful, lasting memories for your family.
Wishing you the best on your breastfeeding journey and beyond!
